Build a Better Instagram Feed for Your Salon

Social media is crucial to building and growing your business, and in the salon and spa industry, a strong Instagram feed is key. With more than 500 million monthly users, it’s a great way to market your business to both current and potential clients, but it takes a little effort. Try these tips to improve your photos and attract new clients.

1. Show off your work with before-and-afters

When a client gets their first round of Balyage or lobs off their long locks, take advantage — give potential clients an idea of what you can do by posting before-and-after photos. Not only does it show what you can do as a stylist, but it gives clients a chance to see the cut they want on a real person rather than a model.

2. Jump on trend bandwagons

Instagram has become a go-to for clients looking for inspiration for their hair — make sure potential clients view you as an expert on current trends by showcasing of-the-moment looks like unicorn hair, lobs and beachy waves.

3. Use natural light and no filters

While it’s easy to want to touch things up by adding a filter or two, let your work speak for itself by showing it in it’s natural state.

4. Highlight special events like weddings

If you do a bride’s hair for her big day, make sure you connect with her photographer for a few snaps of the final product. It’s a great way to add some professional photography to your feed as well as show off the special event work you can do.

5. Build a selfie station

Encourage clients to show off their new ‘do by giving them a fun space to snap a selfie. If you’re short on square footage, try taking it outdoors — brick backdrops and white walls make for nice neutral backgrounds.

6. Share how-to videos

Position yourself as an expert resource in the industry by posting brief video tutorials in your Instagram feed. Make sure they’re things that clients can duplicate at home, like braided crowns, messy buns and fun ponytails.
