Now for those of you who have already created a website for your business, don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can just set it and forget it. A website needs to be updated and nurtured just as much as any other component of your online presence. And as you all know (or I hope you know), having an online presence is paramount to your business, especially if it’s a local one. There are a lot of ways to boost your local web traffic, and having a website is one of the easiest ways.
So, back to our original question: does your website suck?
Simply put, does your current website suck and what can you do to fix it?
There are the 7-deadly sins, or if you want to be less dramatic about it, 7 common mistakes that many small businesses commit on their business website, and they include:
- Too Text-Heavy: Ever visit a website and realize it’s just a hodge-podge of text? What do most people do when they experience this? They exit out.
- Long Page-Load Times: Now, more than ever, customers are impatient. Did you know that 40% of visitors will leave your website if it takes longer than 3-seconds to load. That’s not great for your web traffic, or your bottom line.
- Not Mobile Friendly: This is HUGE and vastly important to address. If your website doesn’t work on phones or tablets, you’ll pay for it – both by the decline in visitor traffic and by Google. As you may have heard (or maybe not?), Google penalizes websites that haven’t been optimized for mobile. But never fear, there’s an easy way to check whether your website is mobile friendly and there’s an easy way to fix your problem.
- Videos on Auto-play: What’s worse than when you’re simply scrolling through a webpage and the video just automatically starts playing. Don’t increase your website bounce rates just because someone wasn’t ready to watch a video without their consent.
- Complicated Online Purchasing: When you’ve set up your point of sale so you’re able to sell your products online, you want the experience to be as seamless as possible. Having a complicated process will leave your customers going for your competitors faster than you can say “add item to cart.”
- Annoying Pop-ups: It’s all about the experience; leave pop-ups that don’t provide any real value out of it.
- No Helpful Contact Information: You should always have a way for your customers to contact your customer service – either provide a phone number or an appropriate email address. At the end of the day, if you’ve got a customer looking to contact you, you want them to come straight to you, not leave a message on your Facebook wall.
Take stock of your current website and make sure everything is up to code. The more you’re doing to improve the experience for your customers, the greater the reward for your small business.
