Bright, sunny weather greeted attendees to this year’s International Beauty Show New York, held March 9 –11, 2014. Salon Professionals from all over the world packed the exhibit aisles searching for the latest and greatest in styling products, tools, and accessories to inspire their creativity.
With thousands of salon stylists and industry gurus in attendance, there couldn’t be a better opportunity to get a pulse of the world of hair and beauty. SalonBooker surveyed more than 500 of the show’s professionals to discover what they were looking for at IBS. More than 54% of the attendees surveyed set out to find new trends for their business. Short and chic styles, vibrant hues, and all natural beauty products and services were among the top trending themes throughout the salon show. The show floor was full of inspiration, high-energy, and non-stop demonstrations showcasing techniques and tools with which to create interesting new styles. Hair color has certainly gone broad spectrum, judging from the models sporting rose gold, lilac, blue, pink and even grey hues. Takara-Belmont, Belvedere, and Pibbs all showed the latest in European-influenced styling and salon equipment. Brazilian Blowout brought a large booth and was busy creating straight, shiny hairstyles. Conair had a huge booth right in the center of the show floor, and Redken also had a large presence. Hair extensions continue to draw widespread attention, along with lash extensions.
The Main Stage was located at the corner of the exhibit floor, making it easy to wander back and forth between booths and the styling showcase, including appearances by Martin Parsons, Sam Villa, Nick Arrojo, Ted Gibson, and the Sassoon Academy team. In the classrooms, dozens of sessions each day were offered by topic, such as Texture Focus, Barber Focus, Makeup Artistry, The Art of Nails, and the Business Side of Beauty. Almost 20 hands-on classes provided opportunities to practice cutting, coloring and lash applications under the watchful eyes of acclaimed tutors including Dennalyn Teal and Sherry Ratay. A selection of $250 Master Class sessions was also offered, taught by industry icons such as Vivienne Mackinder and Ted Gibson; Gibson’s session was a cutting and styling workshop outlining how he charges $1200 for a haircut!
The energy on the show floor was palpable, and I’m sure that energy will translate into salons for 2014.
