Millennials have grown up with technology, and they rely on their smartphones and ipads to discover new brands and businesses just like yours. Before you start thinking that millennials don’t have money to spend anyway, think again: the 80+ million millennials in the United States today generate around $1.3 trillion in annual revenue. So, how can your small business market to this huge group of young people? We’ve got six tips to get your millennial-marketing game in tip-top shape.

1. Boost Your Social Media Presence

Today, millennials’ lives are centered around technology, so keep your small business relevant and on their radar by boosting its presence on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Don’t just post meaningless banter about your business -- create posts that engage customers and ask for their participation. When millennials can interact with a brand, they become more loyal customers.

2. Create Short-Lived Promotions

Millennials live in a fast-paced world where they are used to the instant gratification that their phones and tablets constantly provide them. They like things to happen quickly, so consider utilizing your small business’ social media accounts to offer promotions or contests that only last for a day or less. Offering a smaller time frame will give millennials a sense of urgency -- and the feeling that this awesome deal is a must-have.

3. Be Authentic

When marketing to millennials, avoid campaigns and social media content that contains words such as “buy” and “act now”. Instead of asking them to buy something from your small business, show them that your small business is worth their money by posting genuine, engaging content. Tell millennials how your small business can improve their lives, or share how your business is contributing to the community in some way. For example, if you own a spa, offer discounted massages to students during their finals week. This will show millennials that your small business cares, and soon you’ll be on your way to accumulating tons of young, loyal customers.

4. Utilize Word of Mouth

Millennials don’t trust just anyone -- but they do trust their friends. When social media users are talking about your small business or endorsing your products/services, millennials will notice. By posting often, word of mouth about your small business will continue to spread, and millennials will be lining up at your door.

5. Create Your Own Smartphone App

Don’t just rely on your website to showcase your small business--create an app! As you know, millennials love having easy access to anything and everything, so make your small business available on smartphones. Millennials will love the ease with which they can use the app to schedule appointments, find your best prices, and discover new events.

6. Go Straight to the Source

What’s the best way to figure out how to effectively market to millennials? Talk to one. Whether it’s a family friend, son or daughter, niece or nephew, take some time to chat with a young person so that you can understand what content they respond to. Maybe they’ll show you the innovative photo contest they entered on Instagram, or the free t-shirt they won on Facebook. Once you find out, first hand, what they’re engaging with on social media, marketing for your small business will be a breeze.
